People’s Choice Awards Giveaways

Let’s rack up Peoples’ Choice Awards for our beloved show! Not only tips from Outlander Ambassador, but giveaways, too! 😀

We all know that Outlander deserves every award out there (and some that haven’t been invented yet), but the People’s Choice Awards give us the opportunity to make it happen.

This is a big task. Most of the shows which have won have fan bases 10-20 times the size of Outlander’s. Fortunately, few of them have fan bases as dedicated (or as benignly nutty) as ours. To encourage Outlander fans to vote often and repeatedly, Outlander Ambassadors, Sandie Russo of Knitzy Blonde and an anonymous donor are offering prizes for those who help Outlander get recognized (often and repeatedly) in these awards.

When the nomination ballot is announced on October 21, we expect Outlander and its cast to appear among the 10-15 choices in a number of categories. Every time you vote for Outlander (or cast members) in ALL of the categories in which it appears, you will receive…

#ABOSAA — Bridies! And Whisky, of course…

In my re-reading, I’ve just come upon the scene in A Breath of Snow and Ashes (Ch. 54) where the North Carolina Highlanders all gather for a ginormous barbecue at Jocasta’s plantation, River Run, in celebration of the emigration of the heroine Flora MacDonald to the colonies. Flora MacDonald, for those who don’t know, was the lady who helped Prince Charlie escape after the disaster of Culloden. (Frankly, I think I’d have mixed feelings about both the Prince and Flora, if I lost everything but my life in a war in Charlie’s name… but hey, it’s not my place to say.)

Anyway, Jamie recounts a story of a previous occasion upon which he met the famous lady:

“Oh, I suppose I might say that I’m glad the weather has kept fine for her. It was raining the last time we met.”
Rachel’s jaw dropped, and so did her fan, bouncing on the lawn. Her husband bent to pick it up for her, groaning audibly, but she had no attention to spare for him.

“You’ve met her?” she cried, eyes wide with excitement. “When? Where? With the prin—with him?”

“Ah, no,” Jamie said, smiling. “On Skye. I’d gone wi’ my father—a matter of sheep, it was. We chanced to meet Hugh MacDonald of Armadale in Portree—Miss Flora’s stepfather, aye?—and he’d brought the lass into the town with him, for a treat.”

“Oh!” Rachel was enchanted. “And was she beautiful and gracious as they say?”

Jamie frowned, considering.

“Well, no,” he said. “But she’d a terrible grippe at the time, and no doubt would have looked much improved without the red nose. Gracious? Well, I wouldna say so, really. She snatched a bridie right out of my hand and ate it.”

“And how old were you both at the time?” I asked, seeing Rachel’s mouth sag in horror.

“Oh, six, maybe,” he said cheerfully. “Or seven. I doubt I should remember, save I kicked her in the shin when she stole my bridie, and she pulled my hair.”

Forfar Bridies

These are said to have been made by a travelling food seller, Maggie Bridie of Glamis (in the days when the county of Angus was called Forfarshire). They were mentioned by J M Barrie (author of Peter Pan) who was born in Kirriemuir in that county. The original recipe used suet but since that is not always to everyone’s taste, you can use butter or margarine.

Ingredients (for six bridies):

1½ lbs (700g) boneless, lean rump steak. Lean minced beef can also be used.
2 oz (2 rounded tablespoons) suet or butter or margarine
1 (or 2) onion, chopped finely
1 teaspoon dry mustard powder
Quarter cup rich beef stock
Salt and pepper to taste
1½ lbs flaky pastry (home made or from a pastry mix packet)


Remove any fat or gristle from the meat and beat with a meat bat or rolling pin. Cut into half-inch (1cm) pieces and place in a medium bowl. Add the salt/pepper, mustard, chopped onion, suet (or butter/margarine) and stock and mix well.

Prepare the pastry and divide the pastry and meat mixture into six equal portions. Roll each pastry portion into a circle about six inches in diameter and about quarter of an inch thick and place a portion of the mixture in the centre. Leave an edge of pastry showing all round. Brush the outer edge of half the pastry circle with water and fold over. Crimp the edges together well. The crimped edges should be at the top of each bridie. Make a small slit in the top (to let out any steam). Brush a 12 inch square (or equivalent area) baking tray with oil and place the bridies in this, ensuring that they are not touching. Place in a pre-heated oven at 450F/230C/gas mark 8 for 15 minutes then reduce the temperature to 350F/180C/gas mark 4 and cook for another 45/55 minutes. They should be golden brown and if they are getting too dark, cover with greaseproof paper (vegetable parchment).

Not really my thing, I confess — I’m not much of a meat eater. But hey, JAMMF liked it enough to kick Flora MacD for it…

Claire hasn’t been sober since she was left splatted flat on her breast upon Black Jack’s desk. Wow, that sounds like really bizarre, kinky poetry, doesn’t it?

Anyway… I was thinking about Fraser Ridge Whiskey, and wishing there was a real one. And then I found this — it’s not currently brewed for the public, but the clan is considering crafting it in the future:


That’s right, the 11th Lord Lovat, Jamie’s grandfather, the infamous “Old Fox.” The clan has a private reserve meant for their chief, “Legend has it that the infamous 11th Lord Lovat brewed a whisky so potent that it gave his clansmen extra strength and courage before charging the English in the first wave at the Battle of Culloden, 1746. Each Lord Lovat since has relied on a private reserve to bring strength in times of need.”



SO COOL! And speaking of cool, guess what? You can answer the current Chief of Lovat’s Fiery Cross and join the virtual clan. Whether you are a Fraser, or just a friend of the clan (there are two kinds, check them out), if you don’t have Scottish (or Irish) blood, and an ancestral clan of your own (I have several, but I still joined as a friend) you can be part of Jamie’s clan. Remind  me some day to talk about my own ancestral clans — Elliot and Ferguson. Especially the former. We were cursed by the 16th century church and everything!

While I’ve been procrastinating working, I have also been perusing the virtual TREASURE TROVE of Outlander and Scotland related information over at Outlandish Observations. It’s AMAZING the amount of information she has about the books and the country over there — it’s pretty much an encyclopedia of anything ever referenced in the books, and more! If you look on the left column, you’ll find a list of events in the books that happen during the current month — SO COOL!

I MUST try these drinks from Outlander Kitchen for Thanksgiving and/or Yule and/or Hogmany: Highland Coffees! Yum!


Oh my GODS, fandom, I leave you alone for a couple of days, and you explode over the silliest things! Yes, the pic of Sam swimming and having fun in a pool somewhere in LA is very hot… But I really do NOT understand the freakout. These are the “topics” I’ve seen meltdowns over:

1.) Some people seem to be deluded into believing Sam and Cait are “together” in real life. Well, if that is true, IT’S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS. And it is DEFINITELY not a reason to freak out and accuse a man you don’t know of CHEATING on his co-star. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?


2.) Others are EXTREMELY upset over… and I think I got this right from the gist of the conversation, that Sam is “theirs” or “ours” as a fandom, and they’re deluded into believing he should somehow be a monk if he’s not with them/us? IDEK with this one, it’s so fucking batshit.

That’s pretty much fandom, all right. You can see more and more how the stars start getting wary, withdrawing. More and more of the guano is hurled at them, and less of the respectful, SANE praise for their work, you’re not going to see them be so friendly and generous anymore, just to protect themselves. It really pisses me off.

So what do we get bombed on while we lament the lack of our favorite show today? Another of Sam’s favorites, Laphroaig. From their homepage:

Since When Has Friday Been This Depressing? #Outlander #NoOutlander #OutlanderHellatus

*Sigh* No casting news, no set news, no pictures from anyone’s vacation. *sigh*

But there are a few things:

Out beloved musical director, Bear McCreary, has posted about scoring The Way Out, The Gathering, and Rent. It’s really interesting stuff! I don’t know how much fans look beyond story and characters (or the hotness of actors) to look at all of the many layers of talent and technicality it takes to produce the show we love so much. Everything from Terry’s costumes, the lighting, the set design, and Bear’s music, gives the story richness, depth, and realism. This is a fascinating article about how Bear does his job.

Hey, did you know (I know I sure didn’t) that the waulking song Claire sings with the village ladies in Rent is called “Mo Nighean Donn?” Awesome! He said he put it in as an Easter Egg for fans who could recognize it.

And in other vaguely comforting fan news — Killing Time’s awesome 109 “Both Sides Now” photo screencap PART DEUX is up, and you know that’s a great way to perk up your day. Just set down your beverage before you start reading. Hee. “Wee herbs.” I was taking a break from re-watching for a while, but I’m already getting tempted to watch it again. Still considering just fast forwarding through the Frank bits. I got the narrative necessity, now I can just spare myself, right?

Then, Melanie Poloff gave us “20 Verra Verra Braw Reasons Why Sam Heughan Is The Perfect Jamie Fraser” — they mostly boil down to “He’s Scottish and Hot,” which seems perfectly reasonable to me.


Something wacky is going on with graphic uploads, so I can’t really do my whiskey of the day. Which SUCKS! But in lieu of this very important information, how about tips from expert Blair Bowman, founder of World Whisky Day on how to “properly” taste whisky? I think I said before that my whisky tasting is pretty much limited to “yummy,” “yucky,” and “too drunk to care.” But for a lot of connoisseurs, there IS an art to it. This article gives some basics. 

That’s probably it for today — I have a HUGE freelance project to do, and I REALLY need the money for various things: stuff to make holiday crafts, money for buying gifts, etc. And whether I like it or not, that means buckling down and concentrating, if I want to get these things done AND get my NaNo prep ready in time, I need to FOCUS. So not my natural state of being.

And in today’s whiskey, how about one of Sam’s favorites?


This, my friends, would be varied versions of Lagavulin. I wasn’t sure exactly WHICH one Sam liked, so I just posted a few. The 16 seems to be the most popular, from what I’ve seen. However, being the cheapskate that I am, I think I’ve only had the 12. The taste (of the 16) is described as follows by The Whiskey Exchange.

“The Islay representative in the ‘Classic Malts’ series is a deep, dry and exceptionally peaty bruiser. Probably the most pungent of all Islay malts, Lagavulin is not for the faint-hearted but inspires fanatical devotion in its many followers.”

I don’t really know about flavor beyond “good,” “yuck (I’m looking at you, gin),” and “I’m So Drunk I Don’t Care.” I somehow think that Scottish whisky (apparently I spell it wrong — when it’s crafted in Scotland, it should be whiskY, but when it’s made in the States, it’s whiskEy. Whatevs.) was WAY stronger in the 18th century, so while I’m sure quality still could vary, I don’t think Claire cared. Plus, there’s always the Rhenish. Or the Claret. Whatever’s around!

Let’s see, how much time do we have left? I’m trying to put in a countdown clock on my blog just to depress myself every day, but WordPress is really difficult to add outside apps to. So, right now as I’m typing this, we’re looking at a desert of:

(I have no idea why this didn’t post yesterday, but… whatevs…)

I confess, I’m part of the radio… well, not complete silence, but mostly low static. We’ve all had to move on to other things, with only the occasional breakout of discussion, the posts of our favorite bloggers and podcasters who keep slogging along, and bits of news that either are re-posted, or leak out.

I still have that Frank post planned… I’m just not in a big hurry. Because… Frank.

Ooh, but here’s a cheerful note: Killing Time’s recap of Ep 108 (part 1) “Oh, There’s Frank” I mean, “Both Sides Now” is up!
